Here’s to Our Health

Before I begin, I must clearly state that I am very grateful for the health that my family and I have.  We are not bedridden, hospitalized, or near death.  Although sometimes I may be over-dramatic about my conditions when I’m in the midst of a terrible cold with congestion so horrible that I can hardly breathe, it could always be worse, and I always get better.

That’s what gets me through it.

Not as Sick as Usual

So, seeing as how this blog is dedicated to how horribly sick my children and I are so often, I wanted to start off on a positive note.  Right now, my children and I are well…or well enough, anyway.  I can see DS1 (my oldest son) is coming down with a cold, and I myself may be as well, although I have been treating my allergies with more medications than usual lately.  I usually can’t tell until I’m completely miserable if I am having simple allergy issues or I’m coming down with a cold.

Getting Healthier, for Now…

It could be worse.  But I, in fact, have fabulous news.  DS2 (my youngest son), saw the doctor today for an ER follow-up; she said he’s perfectly recovered.

Recovered from what, you ask?  Well, a little over a week ago I rushed DS2 to the Emergency Room because he consumed cheese.  Yes, cheese makes my son sick, and could, in serious situations, kill the poor child.  It’s just a damn shame he hasn’t figured that out yet at the young age of 3.  So after he ate some of his brother’s dinner when my back was turned, he began coughing and scratching his neck, and then suddenly got hives on his face.

After a 6 day course of Prelone (an oral steroid) and being hopped up on Benadryl, he is now perfectly fine.  This is, of course, heartwarming news considering some children will relapse after their course of steroids and begin having symptoms again.

DS2 was also recently diagnosed with asthma, and I’m happy to report he hasn’t had any symptoms in days, even without his Flovent preventive inhaler.  Unfortunately, I know this is because I’ve avoided the outdoors like the plague had arrived in town.  The pollen count has been ridiculously high lately, and the windy conditions certainly do not help what-so-ever.  However, today was nice.

Food Allergies:  Eating Out Has Become a More Pleasurable Experience

More good news?  Why, yes there is!  Our family branched out from our weekly Chili’s restaurant ritual and ate at Macaroni Grill.  They finally put something on the food allergy menu that DS2 could eat that was dairy free, and I was able to eat some delicious Shrimp Fettuccine Alfredo.  I can never cook it at home anymore, because of DS2′s dairy allergy, and I can’t usually eat it in restaurants as most of them use egg noodles (I am allergic to eggs).  I was in hog heaven eating that fettuccine, and I longed for a second helping.  I settled for another loaf of Peasant Bread instead, something DS2 was also able to have – another dairy free item.  Score!

So here we are, not quite sick, but probably getting sick, after just getting over being sick and having constant mild allergy and asthma symptoms.  So all-in-all, right now we are doing pretty well, all things considered.

Healthy Hubs

I am blessed at the moment, while writing this, my first entry, to hear DH (my husband) and both of my boys wrestling, tickling, and laughing hysterically in the living room.  A sniffle, perhaps a sneeze between the two boys, but they are still up for some good old fashioned rough housing with Daddy.  Life is good.

Thankfully, also, DH isn’t sickly what-so-ever.  He rarely catches colds or the flu; he has no allergies to speak of, food or otherwise, and he’s in excellent shape.  He’s a real trooper learning to cope with and thrive amongst all of us sickies.  He’s a wonderful and loving man.  Truly.

So, that’s it. My first entry on Always Sick and Tired.  While I feel slightly sick and a little tired (DS1 was up a lot last night because of his sniffles), today is better than most, and I’m grateful for that.

Best Health Product

For 2011, my best health product pick is Emergen-C Raspberry, 1000 mg packets. I drink 2-3 of these every day, and it's making a world of difference. I feel great, and I highly recommend them.
